A robot vacuum that won’t charge is almost always a contact or docking problem, not a dead unit — worth ruling out the easy causes before assuming you need a replacement.
Dirty Charging Contacts (the Most Common Cause)
Charging works through direct metal-to-metal contact between pins on the robot’s underside and pins on the dock. Over weeks of normal operation, a fine layer of household dust, floor residue, and pet dander settles onto those contacts and can bake on, acting as an insulating layer that blocks the electrical connection even though everything looks fine.
Wipe both sets of contacts — the pins on the robot and the pins on the dock — with a dry, lint-free cloth or a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let everything dry completely before putting the robot back on the dock. This single fix resolves the majority of “won’t charge” cases.
Improper Docking
The robot needs to sit flush on the dock with every contact point touching — if it’s tilted, angled, or has even one wheel slightly off the dock’s mat or platform, the connection won’t complete. This gets more common over time as area rugs shift, furniture gets rearranged, or the dock itself slides slightly out of position on hard flooring.
Pull the dock away from the wall completely, then place it back deliberately against a flat section of wall and floor, and manually push the robot onto it until it seats fully — most models give an audible tone or a light change when the connection is actually made, not just when it looks docked.
Power Adapter and Outlet Problems
A weak or failing power adapter can’t deliver consistent current to the dock even when everything else is working correctly. Plug the dock directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or extension cord to rule out a flaky intermediate connection, and check that the outlet itself is live by testing another device in it.
Battery Degradation
If the contacts are clean, the docking is solid, and the outlet is confirmed live, and the robot still won’t take a charge, the battery itself is the likely culprit. Robot vacuum batteries typically hold up for 300-500 charge cycles — roughly 1-3 years depending on how often the robot runs — before they degrade to the point of failing to charge at all rather than just running shorter cycles.
A replacement battery is worth pricing out before replacing the whole unit, especially on a robot that’s otherwise working well. If the unit is older and a battery swap isn’t practical or available for your model, that’s the point where a current ECOVACS model is worth comparing against a repair.

Can I clean the charging contacts with water?
Avoid plain water — most manufacturers recommend isopropyl alcohol on a cloth instead, since water can leave mineral residue behind and risks getting into seams near the contacts. Let the contacts dry fully before docking.
How do I know if it’s the battery and not the dock?
Try a different power outlet and confirm the dock’s contacts are clean first. If the robot still shows zero charging response after that, and especially if it previously ran for much shorter times than when new, the battery is the more likely cause.
